Spa Decor: Addressing the Senses

It is important to address all of the senses when thinking of design techniques for a spa. When creating a sensory experience, which all spas should be striving to achieve, it is important that when a client enters the spa their thoughts of the world melt away.  This means that immediately you should see, hear and smell a space that evokes relaxation and rejuvenation. Below are the multitude of elements that a spa should include and perfect.  The styling and decor of a spa is such a  pertinent aspect in the process of relaxation. As a client the spa should make you feel at ease and for a spa owner it should be functional and stylish enough to make clients come back again and again.  There are several spa decor styles that can evoke a different yet equally serene and stylish environment:

Spa Sounds & Aroma:
The sounds and smells of the spa should slowly consume you and relax you. They should not be overwhelming and it ideal if they are slightly sweet and reminiscent of nature's aroma.  Aromatherapy is a very powerful agent in the spa experience and contributes to your overall ease and repair. Sound is another element that should be used to sooth and caress the sense of hearing. Quiet nature sounds, wooden wind instruments and soft guitar are all  sensual and memorizing sounds that assist the healing process.

Spa Color:
Color enhances any interior and spas are no different.  When choosing spa colors you should be mindful of the impact different colors have on the client. You can utilize any color from cool and fresh blues to a sultry indigo or deep red to serene greens, calming neutrals to pure cloud whites.

Spa Lighting:
Lighting is a key element that allows a spa to come alive.  Light can evoke a natural & fresh  feel to a sultry and sensual environment.  From the lighting fixture itself to the candle glow to the daylight incorporated in the space, all levels of lighting should be considered along with the type of style you wish to convey.  It is also important not to overlook the necessity of task lighting in order for the esthetician to properly see and do their job.

An upward wall washing technique can add to wayfinding.

Daylighting is always a calming and connective source of light.

Spa Textures:
Soft textures in a spa are a fundamental element that heightens the sensory experience. Soft textures should be incorporated in the items that have direct contact with the client.  Incorporating textures from nature also brings about a sense of calm and relaxation. You may use vinyl flooring that has a natural wood grain pattern  in the  reception area or corridors, river stones or pebble flooring in the restrooms or wet areas in the spa , grass cloth wallcovering, or potted bamboo as accents in treatment rooms.  Mosaic tile is also a popular material used in spas; often it shimmers and may evoke the feel of glistening water.

Soft, rough, natural, smooth, bumpy--there are all types of textures that can soothe the body.

Spa Accessories:
Accessorize but don't over do it.  Simplicity is a special quality that helps allow clients to unwind and become restored.  Try to remember this key advise when accessorizing spa spaces. It is recommended to pick a few key elements of accessory and repeat them throughout the space. For example, may be your key accesories are large urns with bamboo reeds, small water features throughout and Asian-inspired lanterns.  It is advisable to repeat these three elements in different shapes and sizes throughout.  That way client is visually stimulated with the style of the space but not overly so.

Subtle tones or pops of color, soft light, trickling water, flowers, pottery or artwork
can all be great accents to the perfect spa space.

Spa Durability & Cleanliness:
Durability and cleanliness is a must in spas. It is important that antimicrobial materials and commercial-grade furniture is selected.  Although it is important that spas stay luxurious in look and feel it is as equally important to select furniture, fixtures, and materials that will be able to withstand a lot of traffic and high usage.
